Our goal: All students attain proficiency in reading, writing, math, and critical thinking.

Toward that end, the foundation supports work that:

  • Strengthens education systems to achieve better outcomes for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

  • Prepares students not just to enter college but also to persist, succeed, and graduate.

  • Builds systems and pathways that equip young adults who are not college bound with the skills and career prospects that enable them to attain living wage opportunities.

Myriad factors and variables contribute to achieving this goal. The foundation prioritizes activities that create the conditions for success in the areas of:

  1. People:

    a. Teachers and principals

    b. Students

    c. Parents

    d. Sector leadership

  2. Setting:

    a. Schools

    b. Communities/neighborhoods

  3. System:

    a. Policies & Practice

    b. Applied Research

    c. Governance

While work in each single area is essential, we are most interested in how these factors work together as an ecosystem.

Note: The Square One Foundation does NOT support direct student support activities like tutoring, out-of-school time, and youth development.
